Do I Need to Book My Newborn Photoshoot Before Baby Arrives?
You're pregnant, you've started making plans for your baby's arrival, and somewhere on your ever-growing to-do list is "book newborn photoshoot."
But then you wonder:
Do I really need to book it before my baby arrives?
The answer is no, you don't have to — but if you know you'd love beautiful newborn photographs of those first precious days, I strongly recommend booking your session while you're still pregnant.
And don't worry — booking before your baby arrives doesn't mean we need to know exactly when they're going to make their appearance!

Why should I book my newborn photoshoot before my baby arrives?
There are so many things to think about when you're expecting a baby.
Hospital bags.
Baby clothes.
Car seats.
Nursery furniture.
Appointments.
And trying to remember everything you're supposed to remember!
It's very easy for booking your newborn photography session to slip further and further down the list.
Then suddenly your baby is here.
You're tired, completely in love, probably slightly overwhelmed and wondering how something so tiny can require quite so much stuff.
The last thing you want to be doing at that point is searching for a newborn photographer and hoping they have availability.
Booking during pregnancy means it's already taken care of.
You can simply enjoy those first few weeks with your baby knowing your photographs are planned.

When should I book my newborn photoshoot?
I recommend getting in touch during your pregnancy, ideally around your second or early third trimester.
You don't need to wait until you're close to your due date.
In fact, earlier is often better if you already know you'd like newborn photographs.
When you book, we'll use your due date to plan around. Once your baby arrives, we'll arrange the actual session date based on when your little one was born.
Your due date doesn't need to be exact.
Because let's face it — babies have never been particularly good at following plans!
But how can you book a date if I don't know when my baby will be born?
This is one of the most common questions I get asked.
You don't need to know your baby's exact birthday.
When you book your newborn photography session, your due date gives us a guide.
Once your baby arrives, you'll let me know and we'll arrange your session for the most suitable time.
So whether your baby arrives a little early, a little late or right on their due date, there's no need to panic.
The plan can be adjusted.

What if my baby arrives early?
This is another reason I recommend booking during pregnancy.
If your baby arrives earlier than expected, you'll already have your newborn photographer booked.
Simply let me know your little one has arrived and we'll look at the dates available for your session.
There is no need to start frantically searching for a photographer while you're recovering from birth and getting to know your new baby.
You've already done that part.
What if my baby arrives late?
Exactly the same!
Your due date is simply an estimated date.
If your baby decides they aren't quite ready to meet you yet, we'll adjust your session date accordingly.
There's no expectation that your baby has to arrive on a particular day.
What happens if I haven't booked before my baby arrives?
First of all — don't panic!
If your baby has already arrived and you haven't booked a newborn photoshoot, it's still worth getting in touch.
I completely understand that pregnancy and preparing for a new baby can be overwhelming.
Sometimes photography simply isn't at the top of your list.
If you've found me after your baby has arrived, contact me as soon as you can and I'll let you know what availability I have.
While newborn sessions are often photographed during the first couple of weeks, there isn't a magic cut-off where beautiful photographs are suddenly impossible.
Every baby is different.

Why is the newborn stage so special to photograph?
Those first few weeks are incredibly fleeting.
Your baby will change so quickly.
The tiny fingers.
The wrinkly feet.
The sleepy stretches.
The little noises they make.
The way their whole body fits against your chest.
The way you hold them.
The overwhelming feeling of looking at this little person you've waited so long to meet.
You might think you'll remember every tiny detail.
But when you're awake at 3am several months later, you may be surprised at how quickly those early days begin to blur together.
Photographs give you something tangible to return to.
Not just photographs of your baby, but photographs of you becoming a family.
Do I need to know what I want before I book?
Absolutely not.
You don't need to arrive with a Pinterest board full of poses!
Part of my job is to guide you through the experience.
My newborn photography sessions are relaxed and baby-led, so we work around your baby rather than expecting your baby to fit around the photography.
There is plenty of time for cuddles, feeding, nappy changes and settling.
If your baby needs you, we stop.
If they want a cuddle, we have a cuddle.
If they decide they're wide awake and want to look around at everything, we'll work with that too.
The aim is for your session to feel calm and enjoyable rather than stressful.
Do I need to bring lots of things to the photoshoot?
No.
I'll let you know everything you need to know before your session, so you don't need to turn up with half the contents of your house!
You can simply concentrate on bringing your baby and yourselves.
I'll guide you through the rest.

What if I'm not sure whether newborn photography is for me?
That's completely okay.
You don't have to book simply because you're pregnant.
But if you keep looking at newborn photographs and imagining having beautiful images of your own baby, I'd encourage you not to leave the decision until after your baby arrives.
The best time to enquire is before you need the photographs.
That way, you have time to look through the photographer's work, ask questions, understand the experience and decide whether they're the right photographer for you.
